Book excerpt: This collection of work addresses the contribution that ethnography and linguistics make to education, and the contribution that research in education makes to anthropology and linguistics.; The first section of the book pinpoints characteristics of anthropology that most make a difference to research in education. The second section describes the perspective that is needed if the study of language is to contribute adequately to problems of education and inequality. Finally, the third section takes up discoveries about narrative, which show that young people's narratives may have a depth of form and skill that has gone largely unrecognized.

Book excerpt: This book explores these questions through the narratives of young human rights advocates from the global South--from Nigeria to the Philippines to India to Chile. The authors discuss the latent structural inequalities that the pandemic has deepened, exposed, or suppressed, as well as those that broke people's already fragile trust in governments, the private sector, and civil society organizations. They also explore the strategies of resilience and creative social organizing that have helped confront the pandemic around the globe. The contributors to this book, writing from different perspectives, invite us to consider what we can learn from the interplay between the pandemic and inequality in order to spur a creative reorientation of collective mobilization and advocacy toward the future.

Book excerpt: Archaeology can contribute to the efforts of social scientists to understand the roots of inequality. However, there is a legitimate worry that we might end up imposing contemporary ideologies on the past. That is a particular concern for study of the Formative era in Mesoamerica, where a relatively short sequence from earliest village to urban state means that it is difficult to isolate changes in social inequality from a progressivist narrative of the march to complexity. One strategy for addressing that issue is to shift between analytical scales. That approach is applied in the Soconusco region of the Pacific coast through an examination of the trajectories of sociopolitical organization and social inequality at the large, initial-Formative site of Paso de la Amada.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acknowledged as one of the classics of twentieth-century Marxism, Antonio Gramsci's Prison Notebooks contains a rich and nuanced theorization of class that provides insights that extend far beyond economic inequality. In Gramsci's Common Sense Kate Crehan offers new ways to understand the many forms that structural inequality can take, including in regards to race, gender, sexual orientation, and religion. Presupposing no previous knowledge of Gramsci on the part of the reader, she introduces the Prison Notebooks and provides an overview of Gramsci’s notions of subalternity, intellectuals, and common sense, putting them in relation to the work of thinkers such as Bourdieu, Arendt, Spivak, and Said. In the case studies of the Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street movements, Crehan theorizes the complex relationships between the experience of inequality, exploitation, and oppression, as well as the construction of political narratives. Gramsci's Common Sense is an accessible and concise introduction to a key Marxist thinker whose works illuminate the increasing inequality in the twenty-first century.

Book excerpt: In this paper, I attempt to extend insights regarding statistical aggregates, from scholars such as Hayek (1931) and Mises (1947), to the topic of inequality. Using the work of Lindert and Williamson (2016), I show that a disaggregation of inequality into some of its many subcomponents alters our reading of its evolution. While I only work with stylized facts from the field of economic history, I argue that the promising implications derived from disaggregation militate in favour of more effort being directed toward decomposing the evolution of inequality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper focuses on the epistemic importance played by 'narratives' in economic analysis and their role in enhancing economic growth, discussing the case of India's own 'growth narrative' emerging from the late 1980s. A closer study of the role of 'narratives' in economic analysis offers a historical understanding of economic concepts both, in theory and praxis. The Indian growth narrative (from the late 1980s) saw a marked shift towards a 'pro-market' approach in terms of reforms in trade and economic liberalization, governed by principles of the Washington Consensus. While this structural economic shift allowed India's economy to boost its growth performance across a few sectors (particularly, services), the change in this narrative caused lop-sided economic fluctuations across various socio-economic indicators. The paper highlights some of the key areas of socio-economic divergences, emerging from the early 1990s (after the 1991 reforms) apparent from a rise in wage inequality levels across sectors; a lack of growth of employment opportunities and the rise in gender inequality across the country. The rise in gender-based inequality (rural-urban areas) gets particular attention here in period after 2000s from the evidence gathered on decline in female-male labor force participation rate, disproportionate literacy rates (at secondary, tertiary levels of education), increasing intra-household inequality etc.

Book excerpt: Building from his acclaimed anthology Tales of Two Americas, beloved writer and editor John Freeman draws together a group of our greatest writers from around the world to help us see how the environmental crisis is hitting some of the most vulnerable communities where they live. In the past five years, John Freeman, previously editor of Granta, has launched a celebrated international literary magazine, Freeman's, and compiled two acclaimed anthologies that deal with income inequality as it is experienced. In the course of this work, one major theme came up repeatedly: Climate change is making already dire inequalities much worse, devastating further the already devastated. But the problems of climate change are not restricted to those from the less developed world. Galvanized by his conversations with writers and activists around the world, Freeman engaged with some of today's most eloquent storytellers, many of whom hail from the places under the most acute stress--from the capital of Burundi to Bangkok, Thailand. The response has been extraordinary. Margaret Atwood conjures with a dys¬topian future in a remarkable poem. Lauren Groff whisks us to Florida; Edwidge Danticat to Haiti; Tahmima Anam to Bangladesh; Yasmine El Rashidi to Egypt, while Eka Kurniawan brings us to Indonesia, Chinelo Okparanta to Nigeria, and Anuradha Roy to the Himalayas in the wake of floods, dam building, and drought. This is a literary all-points bulletin of fiction, essays, poems, and reportage about the most important crisis of our times.

Book excerpt: In order to understand the content of new media sources, common traditional media themes surrounding gender and sport are examined through a narrative analysis of WNBA representations within Deadspin, Women Talk Sports, and Women's Hoops Blog. In order to better contextualize this analysis, this thesis also discusses the dynamic relationships of producers, readers, and texts in meaning making and interpretation. By combining the frameworks of Hall's (1980) Encoding-Decoding Model, Jhally's (1989) Sport-Media Complex, and new media scholarship this thesis proposes a new way to conceptualize the power of emerging forms of media: the Sport-New Media Complex. Analysis further reveals that while blogs such as Deadspin often perpetuate common ideologies surrounding women's sport that serve to marginalize the interests and legitimacy of the WNBA, sport news blogs such as Women Talk Sports and Women's Hoops Blog also provide counter-narratives to challenge and negotiate meaning regarding dominant gender ideologies and sport.
