Drawing on extensive research and exclusive interviews, this richly illustrated reference work covers the music, songwriters and performers who contributed to the genre of classic Carolina beach music from 1940 to 1980. Detailed entries tell the stories behind nearly 500 classic recordings, with release dates, label information, chart performance and biographical background on more than 200 artists.

In Carolina Beach Music, local author and Beach Music enthusiast Rick Simmons draws on first-hand accounts from the legendary performers and people behind the music. Simmons reveals the true meaning behind "Oogum Boogum," uncovers just what sparked a fistfight between Ernie K. Doe and Benny Spellman at the recording session of "Te-Ta-Te-Te-Ta-Ta," and examines hundreds of other true events that shaped the sounds of Beach Music.

Book excerpt: Katie Cooper's recent disappearance isn't a big shocker because her friends know that she'd been bent on skipping town. Little does anyone know that she's spending her days chained up in a clearing on an uninhabited island off the Georgia coast after being abducted at knife-point by a psychopath. All Bobby Steele wants in life is some respect for his rock band-and to put his hometown of Savannah, Georgia on the map of cities renowned for their live music scene. But just when it looks as if this dream may be one step closer to reality, a killer strikes in the nearby gambling town of Salt Island. The murderer, dubbed the "Salt Island Slasher" by the local media, toys with investigators by leaving mysterious messages in his victims' throats. Bobby's lifelong friend and sailing partner, Jim Ferguson, uses his family connections with the local newspaper to obtain the contents of these supposedly top-secret messages. Bobby is the only one who can glean anything meaningful from the strange words, and time is rapidly running out for him to prevent the next victim's agonizing demise. The two friends use their wits and sailing skills to deal with a persistent enemy from the past as they work together to prevent the Salt Island Slasher from striking again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amy Marcy Cheney Beach (1867-1944), the most widely performed composer of her generation, was the first American woman to succeed as a creator of large-scale art music. Her "Gaelic" Symphony, given its premiere by the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1896, was the first work of its kind by an American woman to be performed by an American orchestra. Almost all of her more than 300 works were published soon after they were composed and performed, and today her music is finding new advocates and audiences for its energy, intensity, and sheer beauty. Yet, until now, no full-length critical biography of Beach's life or comprehensive critical overview of her music existed. This biography admirably fills that gap, fully examining the connections between Beach's life and work in light of social currents and dominant ideologies. Born into a musical family in Victorian times, Amy Beach started composing as a child of four and was equally gifted as a pianist. Her talent was recognized early by Boston's leading musicians, who gave her unqualified support. Although Beach believed that the life of a professional musician was the only life for her, her parents had raised her for marriage and a career of amateur music-making. Her response to this parental (and later spousal) opposition was to find creative ways of reaching her goal without direct confrontation. Discouraged from a full-scale concert career, she instead found her métier in composition. Success as a composer of art songs came early for Beach: indeed, her songs outsold those of her contemporaries. Nevertheless, she was determined to separate her work from the genteel parlor music women were writing in her day by creating large-scale works--a Mass, a symphony, and chamber music--that challenged the accepted notion that women were incapable of creating high art. She won the respect of colleagues and the allegiance of audiences. Many who praised her work, however, considered her an exception among women. Beach's reaction to this was to join with other women composers of serious music by promoting their works along with her own. Adrienne Fried Block has written a biography that takes full account of issues of gender and musical modernism, considering Beach in the contexts of her time and of her composer contemporaries, both male and female. Amy Beach, Passionate Victorian will be of great interest to students and scholars of American music, and to music lovers in general.

Book excerpt: This is a story of big goals and big dreams. Our hero, Corky Sandoval, a moderately talented surfer in the 1960s, dreams of riding epic waves and winning important surfing events. He and his best friend Gabe, who was born in Hawaii, travel from coast to coast finding adventure and occasionally good surf breaks along the way. Traveling with them is a budding journalist, the red headed vegetarian Abby Colter and a pup named Skipper. Abby kept the guys focused and Skipper mostly slept. Friendships are forged as the saga continues and life gets a bit more complicated as Corky and his traveling companions go on a “surfin surfari” that stretches from Florida to New England. Meanwhile, in present day, businessman Greg Priestly is planning some serious lifestyle changes and pitching his wife on joining him in a new adventure, one that would take them on a trip along that same coastline. Even with the different settings in time, Corky and Greg would cross paths in a most unusual way. All in all, a “Semi True Story”.

But one blistering summer day, after relapsing, getting dumped, and winding up at the hospital, Ilya Gagarin awakes in a nightmare. The only way out, he figures, is to finally debut his EP, meaning, to realize a deeper dream. The process of producing, together with the power of music and an urge to accept his past, is passionately described in his journal—while the larger story follows the weeks leading to his EP launch, his struggle to quit drugs, and his falling in love again to a guardian angel. It is she who teaches him, “Do you know how Russians say Once Upon a Time? Жили были. It translates to They Lived They Were.” Suggesting Ilya might just get his fairy tale ending. Or at least move on.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how popular music is able to approach subjects of bio-politics, climate change, solastalgia, and anthropomorphisation, alongside its more common diet of songs about love, dancing, and break-ups – all while satisfying its primary remit of being entertaining and listenable. Nearly a thousand books have been published on bioethics since Van Rensselaer Potter’s Bioethics Bridge to the Future (1971), with a marked increase in the past 20 years. However, not one of these books has focused itself on popular music, something Christopher Partridge describes as ‘central to the construction of [our] identities, central to [our] sense of self, central to [our] well-being and, therefore, central to [our] social relations’. This edited collection examines popular music through a range of topics, from romance to climate change. Coastal Environments in Popular Song is perfect for students, scholars, and researchers alike interested in bioethics, social history, and the history of music.
