Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Hidden Places of WWII, the author takes readers to overlooked places where WWII history was made. These are sites that were thought to be closed or locked away forever or, in some cases, thought never to exist at all, or were ignored by military historians for decades. With historical photos, contemporary photos, and written in a conversational style, the book opens the eyes of a new generation of readers, as well as an older generation, and takes them to the actual locations that changed history. Many military history readers don’t know that you can still visit Nazi U-boat pens in Lorient and La Rochelle on the French Atlantic coast (they were used in the filming of Raiders of the Lost Ark) and even pieces of the Atlantic Wall Hitler had built along the French coast in ’43 and ’44 to thwart the invasion he knew was coming. These are only two of the many hidden places the author introduces the reader to.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hollister took his unseeing gaze off the door with a start, like a man withdrawing his mind from wandering in far places. He sat down before the dressing-table and forced himself to look steadfastly, appraisingly, at the reflection of his face in the mirror -- that which had once been a presentable man's countenance. He shuddered and dropped his eyes. This was a trial he seldom ventured upon. He could not bear that vision long. No one could. That was the fearful implication which made him shrink. He, Robert Hollister, in the flush of manhood, with a body whose symmetry and vigor other men had envied, a mind that functioned alertly, a spirit as nearly indomitable as the spirit of man may be, was like a leper among his own kind; he had become a something that filled other men with pitying dismay when they looked at him, that made women avert their gaze and withdraw from him in spite of pity.

The genius and fullness of Scripture is made understandable and challenging. Ed Powell is part of that "Greatest Generation" of whom we often speak. In Ed's case, his injuries received in combat should have killed him. Through God's grace he lives today and has been privileged to present another of his excellent works. Be blessed, encouraged and challenged through these Hidden Riches Of Secret Places by the insights of a wonderful man. Paul Guthrie, American Patriot Eustis, FL. Ed Powell has learned to search for God's provision in the tough recesses of life where we often overlook heaven's resources. In Hidden Riches of Secret Places Ed challenges us to look-by faith-for the caches of unlimited grace that God provides to meet our needs in hard places. Doug Salser, President Literature Ministries International, Greenville, TX. "Clear, concise, easy reading! These devotions are Scriptural and motivated by the Holy Spirit. Take a minute and read any chapter! You will be inspired to realize God loves you unconditionally and is ready to help you through any situation in your life." Jay Blint Holly Lake Branch, TX. EDWARD POWELL, a "miracle" of God's grace, was critically wounded in WWII when both forearms and leg were almost blown off by shrapnel from German artillery. He spent two and a half years in Army hospitals recovering as doctors rebuilt his arms and leg. For sixty-three years he has taught God's Word, spoken in churches, retreats and civic groups of God's grace, faithfulness and sufficiency. He has written four companion devotional books entitled Dare to Believe, Dare to Trust, Dare to Walk and Living With the Wind in Your Face.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across decades, Maine has produced nationally-recognized novelists of place-based fiction. From the late nineteenth century to the present, writers have explored the experiences of living in far-flung settings: island and coastal villages; northwoods lumbering communities; unincorporated townships; backcountry hamlets; and mill cities and towns. Taken together their body of work composes a remarkable literary map of a diverse and changing Maine. Hidden Places explores the identity of Maine through its writers and the people and places they captured at moments in time. Hidden Places traces the work of these writers to provoke readers into seeing and understanding Maine places with new awareness. These Maine writers construe place as both a territory on the ground and a country of the imagination. They help insiders see more clearly what is distinctive about their communities and encourage outsiders to better understand what might seem quaint or odd about the state. Like a well-drawn atlas, Hidden Places seeks to capture a diverse state at the granular level one representation at a time. It explores the identity of Maine through its writers and the people and places they wrote of.

Book excerpt: THE singular correspondence which may be traced between the passage-chambers of the Grand Pyramid-called by the Egyptians of old The "Khut," or "Lights"-and the various stages traversed, according to the creed of that ancient nation, by the holy dead in passing from the light of earth to the light of eternal day, was first pointed out by me last year in the pages of the New Review. Previously to publication the article was submitted in substance to M. Maspéro and Professor Sayce; and I desire to express my sincere thanks to those eminent authorities for the recognition and encouragement which they afforded me, as well as to Mr. Mengedoht, the hieroglyphic scholar, for his revision of my work. In the present book the same analogy is worked out in much fuller detail-not completely indeed, for that may well need the labour of years; but sufficiently, I would hope, to present a clear basis for further investigation in either direction. In the case of the Ritual, we obtain what appears to me to be a consistent and intelligible analysis of that hitherto impenetrable creed, through the gradual transformation of the faculties in successive stages of illumination. With regard to the Pyramid, we are led to suggest a spiritual and most far-sighted purpose for its construction. For in that marvellous edifice, the very stones of which in their silent harmony seem to rebuke the idle charges of folly and pride heaped by ignorance upon the architect, we have nothing less than an indestructible and immutable symbol of the national religion.
